Mission San Fernando Rey de España

I did this painting after a visit to the San Fernando Mission in the spring of 2019.  I was particularly struck by the beauty and serenity of the grounds. The view here is of the mission quadrangle, with its Cordovan-style fountain, towering palms, and yellow-ochre buildings with red tile roofs and dark accents. Renowned entertainer and actor Bob Hope and his wife Dolores are both interred in a memorial garden behind the Mission church. 

San Fernando was the seventeenth of 21 Spanish missions established in the province of Alta California.  Located in what is now the Mission Hills district of Los Angeles, the mission was founded on September 8, 1797, and gave its name to both the nearby city of San Fernando and the San Fernando Valley.

The patron saint, King Ferdinand (1198-1252) expelled the Moors from several areas of Spain. A member of the Third Order of Saint Francis, he was buried in a Franciscan habit and canonized in 1671.
