I came across this scene while fishing with friends one early fall morning in Rangeley, Maine. The deep darks of the trees and flowing river contrasted dramatically with the partially lit fly fisherman and the striking foreground rocks. All of the elements of the vignette seemed to point to that lone figure standing on a flat rock in the river. I studied it as carefully as I could and grabbed a reference photo. Later, back in my home studio, working on 140-pound Bockingford watercolor paper, I drew in the strong darks of the background with India ink, using popsicle sticks in various shapes and sizes to apply the medium. A bit of charcoal white suggested birch trees. Finally, I applied watercolor washes over the remaining light areas.
This 2020 work is matted and framed, with museum glass. The image area measures 10 x 14 inches, and the overall framed dimensions are 17 x 20 inches.
